WildE
Climate-smart rewilding: ecological restoration for climate change mitigation, adaptation and biodiversity support in Europe. 2023-2026. EU Horizon Europe.
WildE case Ruhr area.
The cooperation partners (BSWR and the Department of Forest and Nature Conservation Policy at the University of Wageningen) met on 01.02.2023 for a first site visit of rewilding areas in the Ruhr area. At first we visited the former goods station area Frintrop with an old industrial forest dominated by birches (Gleispark Frintrop, Essen).

...we went to an old dump on the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein, Essen. There you can observe a more than 100-year-old robinia forest.
The third area on our excursion was the industrial forest on the former Rheinelbe colliery, Gelsenkirchen. A mixed stock of birch, robinia, cherry and maple.
